WHAT CALLER ID MEANS AND HOW IT AFFECTS THE RUNNING OF A 'HULL24' ACCOUNT

A service offered to
visually impaired surfers in Hull and the surrounding areas.

Caller ID is the number that's sent with the calls you make. For instance, if you call a friend and they aren't available, then later they dial 1471, if you are not withholding your Caller ID, they would hear your telephone number.

Hull24 uses this method to verify where users dial from as a security measure. When you join Hull24, you are asked for the telephone number of the line which is connected to your PC's modem (in many cases this is your normal telephone number).

When you dial-in, the number you call from and the number held on your account are compared, and if they match, you will be granted access to the Internet, otherwise you will get a 'username and password' error.

AM I WITHHOLDING MY CALLER ID?

There are a couple of easy ways to check whether you allow or withhold your Caller ID...

Call your mobile phone from your home phone - if your Caller ID is NOT withheld, you should see your telephone number on the screen.

Call a friend and ask them to dial 1471 after the call - if they hear your telephone number, you are NOT withholding your Caller ID.

IF I AM WITHHOLDING MY CALLER ID, WHAT CAN BE DONE?

You can contact Kingston Communications and ask them to allow your Caller ID

You can insert 1470 in front of the Hull24 dial-up number you use in dial-up networking

I DIAL THROUGH MY COMPANY'S SWITCHBOARD - THIS WITHHOLDS BY CALLER ID AUTOMATICALLY.

Some business switchboards automatically withhold the Caller ID. Speak with the administrator of the switchboard as ask if the Caller ID could be revealed on the calls your make.

Consider the possibility of having a dedicated line installed for Internet access.
